Gita Wiryawan Vies With Wiranto for Badminton Federation Chairmanship
Jakarta. Indonesian badminton federation PBSI is set to hold an election for its 2016-2020 leadership board. The new management will have to elect a new chairman from five candidates, including the incumbent, former trade minister Gita Wirjawan.
The other four candidates are Jakarta PBSI chairman Alex Tirta, Manpower Minister Hanif Dhakiri, National Development Planning Agency (Bappenas) head Bambang Brodjonegoro and Chief Security Minister Wiranto.
Unfair campaign
Some of the provincial PBSI executives have claimed that incumbent Gita has abused his power to gain an unfair early advantage in the election.
Lampung PBSI chairman Abdullah Fadri Auli and Banten PBSI chairman Muhammad Ferli have criticized Gita for using a PBSI-sponsored dinner with Olympic gold medalists Liliyana Natsir and Tontowi Ahmad to promote himself for re-election.
The meeting to elect PBSI's new leaders is on Oct. 30-Nov. 1, in Surabaya, East Java.
