Indonesia So Far Fifth in SEA Games Medal Count
Jakarta. Indonesia has 13 gold, 15 silver and 27 bronze medals at the 2017 Southeast Asian Games as of Wednesday (23/08), and ranks fifth among 11 countries participating.
The host, Malaysia, is on the top with 43 gold, 35 silver and 24 bronze medals, followed by Vietnam with 22 golds, 13 silvers and 20 bronzes. Singapore is third with 21 gold, 21 silver and 19 bronze medals, followed by Thailand with 15 golds, 22 silvers and 28 bronzes.
Indonesia's latest gold was won on Wednesday by gymnast Rifda Irfanaluthfi who scoring 13,125 points defeated Malaysian gymnast Tan Ing Yueh who got 13,100 points.
On Monday, 22-year-old Indonesian swimmer I Gede Siman Sudartawa won a gold medal at the National Aquatic Center in Bukit Jalil, Kuala Lumpur, and broke the games' record by finishing men's 50-meter backstroke in 25.20 seconds and beating Singapore's Quah Zheng Wen's 2015 record of 25.27 seconds.
"Honestly, I'm not satisfied, because I could make my best 25.04 seconds from the last world championships," Sudartawa told state news agency Antara.
"Wish me luck, because I still have to do 100 meters backstroke and relay," he added.
Also on Monday, Indonesia's wushu athlete Lindswell Kwok won gold in the women's tai chi straight sword category, scoring 9.68 points, with her closest competitor Malaysian Yee Jo Audrey Chan earning 9.64 points.
Tonight Indonesia hopes for a medal from its best sport, badminton, as the men's team is now playing against Thailand in the semifinals.
Indonesia's women's badminton team was stopped by Malaysia in the semifinals and gained bronze on Wednesday morning.
