Yogyakarta to Host BWF World Junior Championships in October
Jakarta. The 2017 World Junior Championships, sanctioned by the Badminton World Federation, or BWF, will take place at the Among Rogo Sporting Hall in Yogyakarta on Oct. 9-22 and feature international elite athletes aged under 19.
The championships will return to Indonesia after 25 years, when they were previously held in Jakarta in 1992. The prestigious tournament will see shuttlers from 60 countries compete.
The Indonesian Badminton Federation (PBSI) said Yogyakarta was chosen as the host city for a reason.
"Besides having adequate facilities and having previously hosted an international badminton tournament, Yogyakarta is also known as a city of education, rich in culture and tourism," PBSI secretary general Achmad Budiharto said at a press conference in Jakarta, on Wednesday (13/09).
"Those selling points will be distinctive for participants in a way that they will also gain cultural knowledge besides attending a sporting event."
Meanwhile PBSI chairman, also Indonesia's chief security minister, Wiranto said in a statement that he is proud of the trust given by BWF for Indonesia to host the championships.
"As a host, we'll be a good organizer and respect sportmanship values. I also expect Indonesian shuttlers to come out victorious," he said.
Some Indonesian aces set to participate in the tournament include Ikhsan Leonardo Rumbay in men's singles, Gregoria Mariska Tunjung in women's singles and mixed doubles pair Rehan Naufal Kusharjanto and Siti Fadia Silva Ramadhanti.
The championships will stage two event categories with the team event taking place on Oct. 9-14 before an individual event on Oct. 16-22.
