Jakarta. The Indonesian Basketball League, or IBL, is set to start on Jan. 20 in Surabaya, East Java, with 11 teams participating.
"IBL 2017 kicks off on Jan. 20-22 at Kertajaya Sports Hall in Surabaya," IBL said through its official Twitter account.
IBL, the top basketball league in the country, has a new regulation this year that requires clubs to have foreign players. Their presence is expected to make the games more attractive and leverage the quality of local players.
"We will introduce many innovations this year to see more competitive matches," IBL director Hasan Gozali said on Tuesday (10/01).
Each team in the IBL this season is expected to have two foreign players, with the league paying their fees. The monthly salary cap for foreigners is $3,000 per club.
IBL 2017 will be played in eight series in five cities, with the final match in May.
The 11 teams are CLS Knights Surabaya, Satria Muda Pertamina Jakarta, Bank BJB Garuda Bandung, JNE Siliwangi Bandung, Bima Perkasa Yogyakarta, Pelita Jaya Jakarta, News Aspac Jakarta, Hangtuah West Sumtera, Satya Wacana Salatiga, NSH Jakarta and Pacific Caesar Surabaya.
