Disney to Build Theme Park in Boyolali, Central Java: District Head
[Updated on Tuesday, April 18, 2017, The Walt Disney Company has denied involvement in the project.]
Jakarta. The government has expressed support for a plan to establish a Disneyland theme park in Boyolali, Central Java, with officials expecting the project to create jobs and attract more tourists to the province, Cabinet Secretary Pramono Anung said.
"Disneyland would bring significant economic improvement to the area, so of course we welcome it," Pramono told reporters at the State Palace in Central Jakarta on Monday (17/04).
His comments came a week after local media outlets reported a Rp 6 trillion ($452 million) investment plan to develop the world-renowned theme park in Central Java.
Finance daily, Bisnis Indonesia, reported that investors – including film studio and theme park operator Universal Studios – are expected to break ground for the 100-hectare theme park in September, citing Boyolali district head Seno Samudro.
If the plan comes to fruition, Boyolali will host Asia's fourth Disney theme park, after Hong Kong, Shanghai and Tokyo.
However, previous proposals for a Disney theme park in the country have stalled in recent years.
In 2014, state-owned airport operator Angkasa Pura II said it would study the feasibility of building a theme park close to Kualanamu International Airport near Medan, North Sumatra.
A year later, rumors emerged that MNC Land – the property developer company of media mogul Hary Tanoesoedibjo – would build a Disneyland in Lido, West Java.
However, the company later clarified that Disney was not affiliated with the planned theme park.
