Gov't to Complete Kuningan Reservoir by Year's End
Jakarta. The Ministry of Public Works and Housing wants to complete the development of West Java's Kuningan Reservoir by the end of the year, it said in a statement on Monday (15/01).
The reservoir is one of 65 being built by the ministry, five of which are in West Java.
"The Kuningan Reservoir is 75 percent complete in terms of construction and 84 percent in terms of land clearing. It is expected to start accumulating water in early 2019," the statement said.
The Rp 727 billion ($50.8 million) worth reservoir can store 25.9 million cubic meters of water and will help irrigate 3,000 hectares in Cileuweung and Jangkelok districts.
State-owned construction company Wijaya Karya started the development project in 2013.
The other four reservoirs in West Java are the Cipanas Reservoir, the Ciawi Reservoir, the Sukamahi Reservoir and the Leuwikeris Reservoir.
"Reservoirs are important in supplying water to rice fields. At the moment, out of 7.3 million hectares only 11 percent are irrigated using water from reservoirs," Public Works Minister Basuki Hadimuljono said in the statement, adding that when all are ready, the figure will increase to 20 percent.
President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo's administration sees the development projects as important for food sufficiency, flood management and generating electricity.
