GrabHitch Now Allows Commuters to Share Rides in Jakarta
Jakarta. Ride-hailing service Grab has launched a new feature in Jakarta called GrabHitch, which allows customers to share rides with motorcyclists heading in the same direction they plan to go.
The service is expected to reduce traffic congestion in the greater Jakarta area, while at the same time cut carbon emissions.
A study has found that 73 percent of commuters in Jakarta travel alone in their private vehicles, while 70 percent of them are willing to share a ride to cover the fuel costs.
"Public transportation connecting Jakarta with suburban areas is still under construction, while taxi services are rare in suburban housing complexes, as most drivers are concentrated in the city center. We see the opportunity in our 'bike-pool' service, which will give a chance to riders to share rides with Grab passengers," Grab Indonesia managing director Ridzki Kramadibrata said in a statement received by the Jakarta Globe on Wednesday (20/10).
Ridzki added that Grab's new service is an alternative for customers who commute long-distance, as it is more affordable than taxis, or even buses in certain cases.
GrabHitch rates are calculated based on the distance and will be made known to passengers before making a booking.
