Idul Fitri Transfers Chaos to Be Resolved by Weekend: Mandiri Boss
Jakarta. Bank Mandiri, the country's biggest bank by assets, promises to settle by the end of the week the problems its customers faced ahead of the Idul Fitri celebrations, a top executive said on Monday (26/06).
"Last Thursday [June 22] was extraordinary as we recorded nearly 50 million payroll transactions and holiday bonuses on that day," Mandiri president director Kartika Wirjoatmodjo told reporters.
The bank's average number of transactions a day is usually 15 million.
On June 22, many of the Bank Mandiri customers were unable to transfer money to other banks or obtain cash from ATM machines, but still their money was withdrawn from their accounts. Transactions using Electronic Data Capture (EDC) machines were also failed.
A Bank Mandiri customer, Faza Meonk, 26, told the Jakarta Globe he tried to withdraw Rp 3,000,000 ($225) in three different transactions at a Mandiri ATM in Kalibata on Thursday. Two of the three transactions were failed.
"I tried to withdraw Rp 1,000,000 at the ATM and two [transactions were] failed. The third one went through, but then I got an SMS report saying my account was debited three times," he said.
According to Kartika, the worth of the failed transactions on the day was "only several billion rupiahs," far less compared to the trillions rupiah that were successfully transferred.
"We must increase our capacity during peak times ahead of the New Year's and Idul Fitri celebrations," Kartika said, adding the bank returned the customers' money a day later and fixed the problem with interbank transfers, but it is still settling the EDC failure.
