Indonesia Gears Up for $456m Gaming Industry by 2017

Jakarta. The government has joined forces with local game developers to set a framework to propel Indonesia's gaming industry to a global level, a senior official said on Thursday.

The Indonesian gaming market is projected to reach $465 million [what] in 2017, making it the second largest gaming market in Southeast Asia, after Thailand, according to a projection by Amsterdam-based gaming market research firm Newzoo.

However, despite the large projection target, the contribution from local developers to the industry remains small.

"It's an ongoing project ... Our steps to facilitate and encourage the growth of the local game industry will be more measurable in the future with the road map," Triawan Munaf, head of the Creative Economy Agency, said.

The road map is still in the infancy stage, according to Anton Soeharyo, Touchten chief executive, who joined the first brainstorming session between the government and game developers on Monday.

Touchten is a Jakarta-based game designing company that secured funding from Japanese mobile and social firm GREE and US-based 500 Startups last year.

"Nothing has been set in stone, but we're going to keep a positive attitude. All stakeholders in the meeting agreed that the gaming industry is as important as other digital industries. It even made money more than films," Anton said.

According to Newzoo's data, Indonesia is among the fastest growing markets in the region. The total sales of Asia's gaming industry reached $41.56 billion in 2015 of which Indonesia contributed $312.79 million.

However, Indonesia's local developers only contributed 1.8 percent to the domestic market, Anton said. Their contribution to the global $91 billion gaming market were even tinier.

"Yesterday we discussed several targets. First, we'll try to increase the developer base as we only have around 150 [game] developers in the country. Second, we want [local developers] to dominate the local market in 2020. At least, we want to control around 40 percent to 50 percent of the market," he said.

The next meeting between the government and the stakeholders in Indonesia's gaming industry will take place in February.
