Google Teams Up With Indomaret to Provide Digital Gift Cards for Play Store
Jakarta. Google will start selling physical gift cards at Indomaret minimarkets in the greater Jakarta area this week, allowing Android users to redeem the new products through its online marketplace, the technology giant said in a statement on Monday (27/03).
The gift cards will be similar to voucher codes currently available on Google Play, which is the company's online marketplace.
"Basically, both have the same product functionality, which allows users to buy any digital content available on the Play store, but the form of the products is different and the available denominations are also different," a Google Indonesia spokesperson said on Monday.
The Google Play voucher codes are available in denominations of between Rp 50,000 ($3.75) and Rp 500,000, while the new gift cards will be available in denominations ranging from Rp 150,000 to 500,000.
Android users will be able to redeem Google's gift cards at Indomaret locations in Jakarta from later this week, providing virtual currency to consumers who wish to purchase digital content on the Play store, including apps, games, books and films.
According to the company's website, the voucher codes will not have any expiration dates, allowing users to hold on to them for as long as they like.
The gift cards will be available in other cities later next month, including Bandung and Purwakarta in West Java; Semarang in Central Java; Yogyakarta; Surabaya, Malang and Gresik in East Java; and Medan in North Sumatra
The gift cards are targeted at consumers without access to credit cards – a requirement to purchase the existing voucher codes.
