KAI to Study Jakarta-Bandung Railway for 2020 High-Speed Project
Jakarta. Indonesia's state train operator KAI is determined to learn from the construction of the Jakarta-Bandung medium-speed railway system in preparation for building a high-speed line connecting the capital and Surabaya as soon as 2020.
The government decided earlier this year to put the Jakarta-Surabaya project on hold for at least five years and relocate resources to building a railway network outside of Java island.
"We're going to focus on the Jakarta-Bandung medium-speed railway first. Once the project is complete, then the second [high-speed] project would be a lot easier because we would have learned so much from the first one," KAI president director Edi Sukmoro said on Friday.
"I am sure we will benefit from the transfer of technology during construction [of the Jakarta-Bandung line]," said Edi.
KAI is part of Pilar Sinergi BUMN Indonesia, a consortium of state-owned enterprises that will build the Jakarta-Bandung railway line.
According to its schedule, the consortium will break ground on the project next year for the public to enjoy the train's services in 2019.
