Jakarta. After a decade of the social media platform’s global presence, Twitter Indonesia celebrated in Jakarta on Monday (21/03) by commemorating the nation's iconic moments of the past ten years with the hashtag #KarenaTwitter (Because of Twitter).

The 140-character social media platform was founded by Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey in 2006 and currently has over 20 million users in Indonesia.

Some 77 percent of those are active users, and 54 percent of these are active daily, according to Twitter country business head for Indonesia Roy Simangunsong.

“Over the course of ten years, Twitter has seen some of Indonesia’s most iconic moments, ranging from music, politics, social movements, to natural phenomena – promoting unity and solidarity, and it has shown the world what Indonesia is made of,” Roy said.

Two senior government officials who actively use Twitter, Lukman H. Saifuddin, the religious affairs minister, and Ganjar Pranowo, the governor of Central Java, were invited to attend a special ceremony on Monday.

Ganjar stated that he began using Twitter in 2010.

“Because of Twitter, I can finally understand what the people want and see people’s opinions first hand,” the governor said.

Lukman said that he was introduced to Twitter in 2009.

“Twitter is a more convenient platform and because of Twitter, I became aware of issues I had never heard of,” he said.

Both officials said Twitter had become their preferred platform to express themselves, and meet new people.
