Twitter Starts Quest for New Boss to Head Indonesian Office
Jakarta. San Francisco-based tech giant Twitter is now on a search for a new chief for its Indonesian office, following the resignation of Rick Mulia eight months after his entry into the social networking service company.
The company, which rose to popularity around the world with its 140-character online micro-blogging service, had opened its Jakarta office in March and appointed Rick as the head of Twitter in Indonesia.
However, Priscila Carlita, a spokesperson for Twitter Indonesia, said that Rick, who is currently based in Singapore, is now unable to make the move to Jakarta due to "personal reasons." Rick did not immediately reply to Globe Asia's e-mails.
"First, we would like to thank Rick Mulia for his contribution and leadership for opening Twitter's office in Indonesia, one of our largest and most important markets in the world," said Priscila in an email to Globe Asia on Tuesday.
"We are looking for his replacement in Indonesia and will have some news shortly to share with you. We remain committed to Indonesia and will continue to invest in operations there as we have many exciting plans for the rest of the year," she added.
With a rapidly growing population of affluent and youthful consumers, Indonesia is home to one of the world's biggest social media user bases, drawing companies such as Twitter and Facebook to establish local offices in the country.
News of Rick's resignation from Twitter came less than a month after Twitter chief executive Dick Costolo submitted his resignation earlier in June. Costolo had resigned amid growing scrutiny by shareholders on the service's sluggish user growth and failure to lure in advertisers compared to its competitors, according to a report by Reuters.
Following his eight-month stint in the company, Rick will now be returning to his former position as the chief advertising and sales officer at the Singapore-based travel search site Wego, according to an official statement from Wego on Tuesday.
"I am looking forward to returning to Wego and helping the company achieve the next level of growth,” Rick said in a statement.
