KPK Considers Increasing Monetary Rewards to Combat Graft
Jakarta. The Corruption Eradication Commission, or KPK, might increase monetary rewards for citizens who report or reveal graft practices within any public institution or state agency.
Under the proposed changes, KPK would reward informants with 10 percent of the funds they report as graft.
In a discussion with Diponegoro University students in Semarang, Central Java, on Thursday (27/04), KPK deputy commissioner Alexander Marwata said the reward incentives would help the commission combat systemic corruption.
"It would definitely aid our investigations," Alexander said, adding that providing remunerations to private citizens is a legal act as stipulated by government regulation No. 71/2000.
Alexander believes greater monetary compensation would draw increased public participation in the fight against corruption.
"We think that the [previous] 0.02 percent reward system was too low. I proposed to increase compensation to 10 percent [of extorted funds]," Alexander on Tuesday.
"Let us be logical. Which is better for the state, to lose Rp 1 billion [$75,000] due to graft, or to give Rp 100 million to those who helped report and unveil corruption?"
