Jakarta. While the South Jakarta District Court has decided to continue with Setya Novanto's pretrial motion to clear him as graft suspect, a trial against the former House of Representatives speaker started at the Jakarta Corruption Court on Wednesday (13/12).
The court's ruling in the pretrial motion will be announced on Thursday, South Jakarta District Court judge Kusno said, as reported by Antara news agency.
The Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) named Setya as a suspect for the second time in October, in a graft case surrounding procurement of national electronic identity cards (e-KTP).
The non-active Golkar Party chairman was named as a suspect in the same case in July, but had the charges dropped in a similar proceeding, also at the South Jakarta District Court.
On Wednesday, Jakarta Corruption Court judge presiding over Setya's graft case, Yanto, announced that the former House speaker has become a defendant in the case and his trial will be open to the public.
Meanwhile, during Wednesday's pretrial motion hearing, the KPK brought to the Jakarta District Court expert witness Zainal Arifin Mochtar from Gadjah Mada University in Yogyakarta.
According to Zainal, as Setya's legal status shifted from suspect to defendant, in accordance with the code of criminal procedures the pretrial motion has no basis to continue.
Setiadi, who leads the KPK legal team, said he will wait for the court's ruling.
