Reborn Fadli to Compete in Asia Para-Cycling Championship in Bahrain
Jakarta. Muhammad Fadli Imamuddin, a talented former motorcycle racer who lost his foot in an accident, is set to make a comeback in the 2017 Asia Para-Cycling Championship, which will take place in Bahrain from Feb. 24 to Mar. 3.
Fadli faced the tragic misfortune when he was struck from behind by Thailand's Jakkrit Sawangswat on the finishing line while celebrating his win in the 600 cc Asia Road Racing Championship in Sentul, West Java, in 2015.
Doctors had to amputate his foot eight months after the incident.
In consideration of Fadli's background, and the fact that he likes to cycle to keep fit, the Indonesian Cycling Federation (ISSI) decided to approach him to become a para-cyclist.
"I saw his spirit, and it turned out that he accepted our offer," ISSI cycling coach Puspita Mustika Adya said in a statement.
"He averages about 37 to 38 kilometers per hour at the moment," she added.
With Fadli's entry into the sport, Indonesia will now participate in the Asia Para-Cycling Championshipfor the first time.
"I know it won't be easy, but I only think of giving my best and the result will come [automatically]," Fadli said.
He will compete in the C4 category, which involves athletes who are handicapped below the knee.
