6.5 Magnitude Quake Rocks Subang in West Java
Jakarta. An earthquake measuring 6.5 on the Richter scale hit Subang in West Java on Tuesday morning (19/10), the BMKG, or the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency, reported. No tsunami warning was issued.
The quake struck at 7.25 a.m., with an epicenter detected 120 kilometers northeast of Subang at a depth of 654 kilometers.
National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho said five- to eight-second tremors from the quake were felt as far away as Banten and Jakarta.
Light tremors were also reported in Bekasi, Sumedang, Cikarang, Cirebon, Indramayu, Bogor, Cilegon and Sumedang — all in West Java.
No fatalities have been reported so far. "As far as we know, the quake has not caused any fatality. The epicenter was too deep underground to cause any serious damage. People in affected areas are going about their daily business as normal," Sutopo said.
