Danger Zone Narrowed on Bali's Mount Agung
Jakarta. The National Disaster Mitigation Agency, or BNPB, announced on Thursday (04/01) that after a recommendation from the Volcanology and Disaster Mitigation Center, or PVMBG, it has reduced the "danger zone" at Bali's Mount Agung from a radius of 10 kilometers from the crater to 6 kilometers, even though the volcano is still in its "eruption phase."
Residents from 12 villages at the foot of the mountain — Nawakerti, Jungutan, Buana Giri, Sebudi, Besakih, Dayah, Pempatan, Tulamben, Dukuh, Kubu, Baturinggit and Ban — are told to remain in their evacuation shelters, BNPB spokesman Sutopo Nugroho said.
Those whose villages are located out of the new danger zone can now return home.
According to Sutopo, around 70,000 people will remain in more than 200 evacuation shelters at the moment.
"Visual, instrumental and data analyses show Mount Agung is still in its eruption phase," Sutopo said, adding that the main dangers now come from the mountain spewing more volcanic materials and lava from its crater.
Agung Pribadi, a spokesman from the Energy and Mineral Resources Ministry, said on Thursday that around 20 million meter cubic of lava is still trapped inside the volcano.
