Massive Earthquake Rocks West Sumatra
Jakarta. A 6.2 magnitude earthquake occurred off the coast of Padang, West Sumatra, early on Friday morning (01/09), causing widespread panic.
The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) said the epicenter of the quake, which occurred at 00.06 a.m., was 57 kilometers east of Muara Siberut in Mentawai, at a depth of 59 kilometers.
Local resident Andriza, 19, suffered a thigh injury after jumping from the second floor of a building and landing on a fence during the incident.
"I was sitting on the second floor of a boarding house and panicked when I suddenly became aware of the earthquake and decided to jump," Andriza said, as quoted by state-run news agency Antara.
The BMKG reported that the earthquake impacted Padang, Pariaman, Painan, Mentawai, Bukittinggi, Lima Puluh Kota, Tanah Datar, Solok, Mukomuko and North Bengkulu.
Many people reportedly fled their homes in fear, while dozens of hospital patients were also evacuated.
Muaro Padang Prison also evacuated 1,428 prisoners from the cell blocks.
There have been no immediate reports of serious damage and no tsunami warning.
