Indonesia to Focus on Reforming the Bureaucracy to Improve Competitiveness: Sri Mulyani
Jakarta. The Ministry of Finance has pledged to reform bureaucracy and improve services as part of efforts to create a sense of certainty in doing business in Indonesia and gaining the public's trust, Finance Minister Sri Mulyani Indrawati said on Friday (30/09).
Sri Mulyani's comment came after the World Economic Forum released the Global Competitiveness Report 2016-2017 earlier this week that put Indonesia as the world’s 41st most competitive economy out of 138 countries in the world, down four places from a year earlier.
"It's very serious homework for us a country," Sri Mulyani told reporters.
Sri said the report highlights Indonesia's weak defense against corruption and a lack of effectiveness within bureaucracy has hampered the country's progress in becoming the world's most competitive economy.
"The list even considers tax and tax service in Indonesia among the reasons [to lower the country's rank] which we will fix, even if these reasons are still below other problems like corruption and bureaucracy," she said
The Global Competitiveness Report 2016-2017 noted Indonesia's labor market that deemed too rigid for redundancy costs, complicated procedures to start a business — discouraging entrepreneurship — and low availability of high-speed internet which signals the country's unpreparedness in tapping the digital revolution.
