Up-Close With Successful Entrepreneurs at Creativepreneur Corner 2017
Jakarta. A group of inspiring leaders and successful entrepreneurs gathered at the Creativepreneur Corner 2017 talk show to share their success stories on Saturday (04/02).
More than 1,700 people arrived to The Hall at Senayan City Mall in Jakarta, which was transformed into a space resembling a science lab. The futuristic stage had LED walls, purplish neon lights, flasks with colorful moving liquids, and hexagonal shapes filled with names of chemical compounds. The organizers wore lab coats.
The talk show was divided into three sessions, each featuring four speakers who delivered 10-minute presentations.
The first session saw Creative Economy Agency (Bekraf) head Triawan Munaf, who talked about the present and future of Indonesia's creative industries.
"Among the 16 sub-sectors of the creative industries, we prioritize three: film, music, as well as apps and games. In terms of film, we still face a challenge, because we only have 1200 cinemas [in the country]," Triawan said.
During the same session, singer Tulus recounted how he established his own recording company, while comic books author Sweta Kartika talked about his bid to promote comics about pencak silat (traditional martial arts). Co-founder of online ticket-booking service Traveloka Albert Zhang spoke about his ups and downs in the business.
The second round featured actor and founder of satirical website Malesbanget.com Christian Sugiono, Lippo Group director John Riady, co-founder of online crowdfunding website Kitabisa.com Alfatih Timur, and chief executive of online marketplace for tutors RuangGuru.com Belva Devara.
Digital platform is key to their businesses. They explained how rapid changes in technological development are what sparks "eureka" moments rather than fear.
"There is a Chinese proverb that says 'when the winds of change begin to blow, some people build walls, while some others build windmills.' I hope everybody can embrace change because it comes with many opportunities," John Riady said.
The speakers not only shared the success stories in their journeys to the top, but also embarrassing moments that marked them. Christian revealed how he spent his nine-month allowance in just three months to survive a long-distance relationship with former girlfriend, now wife, Titi Kamal.
John Riady, known by the public as the "heir of the Riady kingdom," told the audience how he used to work at McDonald's back in the 1990s.
After each presentation speakers were served their favorite meals, whereby the audience realized Alfatih's favorite was sweet martabak and Belva's nasi Padang.
The most anticipated final session featured Surabaya Mayor Tri "Risma" Rismaharini, who did not only talk about her initiatives to reduce poverty, but also shared little-known facts, like how she personally approached sex-workers in the city's red-light district, Dolly, before closing it down, or how she survived a near-death experience during severe flooding.
"I had no time to campaign, I thought it was God's way telling me I should quit my career as a civil servant. But then I won," Risma said.
The final session also saw three other strong women, Kebab Baba Rafi franchise founder Nilam Sari, cosmetic brand Rollover Reaction chief executive and founder Naya Tinanda Nabila and blood donation website Reblood founder Leonika Sari.
The moderators, Reza Chandika and John Martin did their best to entertain the audience and presented the speakers with tough and personal questions.
The day-long event ended around 7 p.m.
