STIP Principle Sacked After Student's Death
Jakarta. Capt. Weku Frederik Karuntu, principle of the Indonesian Merchant Marine Academy, or STIP, has been sacked after the death of 18-year-old student Amirullah Adityas Putra.
Amirullah succumbed to injuries after five senior students assaulted him at the STIP's dormitory in Marunda, North Jakarta, on Tuesday (10/01).
Transportation Minister Budi Karya Sumadi said the ministry, which supervises the academy, dismissed Weku on Wednesday for neglect in monitoring his students.
"If a student engages in violence, he should be removed from the school. If he [Weku] was unable to control the situation, he in not fit for this position," Budi said at the State Palace in Jakarta.
After dozens of witnesses were questioned, police have named five suspects: Sisko Mataheru (19), Willy Hasiloan (20), Iswanto (21), Akbar Ramadhan (19) and Jakario (19).
"Since [the assault] resulted in death, the case must be investigated; law enforcers will do what's needed to be done," Budi said.
The academy has been notorious for violent incidents involving its students. In 2014, Dimas Dikita Handoko died after seven seniors attacked him. In 2008, Agung Bastian Gultom was beaten to death by eight STIP students.
