Landslides Kill Five People, Thousands Are Affected by Flood in Jakarta
Jakarta. Torrential rains in Jakarta and West Java since Monday (05/02) have affected more than 11,000 people, the National Disaster Mitigation Agency, or BNPB, said on Tuesday.
More than 6,000 people living along the Ciliwung River in Jakarta have been evacuated, as the river started to overflow and flood their households.
According to BNPB spokesman Sutopo Nugroho, the flood affected several areas in South Jakarta and East Jakarta, where 31 shelters were set up by the disaster mitigation agency.
Five people were killed by landslides in Jakarta and Bogor, West Java.
A woman succumbed to her injuries on Tuesday morning, a few hours after she was rescued from rubble left by a rail bridge near Soekarno-Hatta International Airport.
According to Arif Faisal, corporate secretary of Garuda Maintenance Facility AeroAsia (GMF AeroAsia), the victim, Dianti Diah Ayu Cahyani Putri, was the company's employee.
She was on her way home with co-worker Mukhmainna Syamsuddin. Rescuers spent more than 10 hours trying to save Dianti, and more than 14 hours to pull Mukhmainna from the rubble, after the rail bridge collapsed and buried their car. Mukhmainna is still hospitalized at Siloam Hospital in Tangerang, Banten, near the airport.
In Bogor's hilly Puncak area, landslides on Monday claimed four lives, Sutopo said. A 10-year old boy is still missing. Rescuers will continue to search for him on Wednesday morning.
"Heavy rainfalls over the past two weeks have increased the possibility of disaster. We are strengthening our early warning system," Sutopo said.
