Bedug Beat
Before the start of Ramadan every year, sellers of bedug – a type of drum used by Javanese Muslims for religious purposes – start to occupy the sidewalks along Jalan K.H. Mas Mansyur in Tanah Abang, Central Jakarta.
The big double-headed drums, with water buffalo hide on both sides, usually form part of traditional Indonesian gamelan ensembles.
Demand for these instruments normally spikes shortly before and during the fasting month, as they are used at mosques, shopping centers and even private homes to signal the end of fasting every day. They are also used to celebrate takbiran, the night before Idul Fitri, and to announce the time for Friday prayers.
Bedug are sold for between Rp 150,000 and Rp 600,000 ($11-$45), depending on the size.
