The Jakarta Public Works Agency continued to clear sewers along Jalan Gatot Subroto on Friday (10/03).
The work started last week, with the assistance of the Jakarta Water Agency, after acting Governor Soni Sumarsono Sumarsono ordered teams to clear the sewers to avoid future flooding.
"Nearly 90 percent of the utilities in Jakarta are installed in sewers," he said.
Prolonged rain earlier this month caused flooding on Jalan Gatot Subroto. At the time, incumbent Jakarta Governor Basuki "Ahok" Tjahaja Purnama said it was not merely as a result of the heavy downpour, but due to blockages caused by discarded cable casings, trash, rocks and silt that have collected in the sewers.
