The Orient and Beyond in Genevieve Couteau's Works
The National Gallery in Jakarta opened "The Orient and Beyond," a special exhibition of the works of Genevieve Couteau (1925-2013) on Wednesday (24/01). The French artist arrived in Bali in the early 1970s to study Balinese culture. Her son, art critic Jean Couteau co-curated the exhibition.
The artist portrayed especially women, but not in their standard domestic setting or as oriental courtesans, like many European painters would. She was focused on their individuality and spirituality. Her objects are subjects.
"The Orient and Beyond" features Couteau's drawings from Bali and several paintings from her journey to Laos.
The exhibition is open until Feb. 14.
