Police to Question Akil Mochtar in Bambang Widjojanto Alleged Perjury Case: Source
Jakarta. Indonesia's National Police has summoned former Constitutional Court chief justice Akil Mocthar to testify in the alleged perjury case implicating Corruption Eradication Commission commissioner Bambang Widjojanto, a National Police source says.
"This afternoon we plan to question A.M. in connection with Bambang Widjojanto," the source told the Jakarta Globe, speaking on condition of anonymity.
Akil is currently serving a life sentence in prison after he was found guilty of receiving bribes to issue favorable court rulings in several local election disputes.
Jakarta Police spokesman Sr. Comr. Rikwanto previously confirmed that Akil was among the witnesses who would be questioned in the case. Bambang is accused of directing witnesses to commit perjury during his time working as a defense lawyer in a local election dispute in 2010.
During his trial Akil mentioned that Bambang once asked for a lift in Akil's car and approached him and persuaded him to issue a ruling in favor of his client.
Bambang has denied Akil's statement.
Bambang was named a suspect by the police after a lawmaker from the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P), who lost in that West Kotarawingin election in 2010, reported him to the police.
Bambang said he was intimidated by police during an 11-hour questioning on Monday.
Bambang's lawyer, Saor Siagian, said the legal team was not allowed to assist Bambang when he was questioned by the police's crime detective unit (Bareskrim).
Bambang's legal team also criticized the police for refusing to hand a copy of the dossier after the questioning.
