'Ada Apa Dengan Cinta 2' Premieres in Indonesia, Malaysia and Brunei
Jakarta. Less than one year after the official announcement of a sequel to "Ada Apa Dengan Cinta?" ("What's Up With Love?"), the highly anticipated "Ada Apa Dengan Cinta 2" finally has its wide release on cinemas in Indonesia, Malaysia and Brunei today (28/04).
Directed by Riri Riza and produced by Mira Lesmana of Miles Films, the sequel will bring the much-beloved characters, Cinta (Dian Sastrowardoyo) and Rangga (Nicholas Saputra), back to the big screen fourteen years after the original teen romantic drama was released.
Fans will finally get to find out how the relationship between the poetry-loving high-school lovebirds—now thirty-something grown-ups living in Jakarta and New York, respectively—transpires after they parted in a memorably heart-wrenching airport scene in the 2002 love flick.
A trailer to the sequel, released online last month, hinted that Cinta and Rangga will meet each other again—though not everything will be hunky-dory between them, at least at first.
In addition to Dian and Nicholas, who shot to stratospheric fame after the original film, a slew of supporting actors are also reprising their roles in the sequel, including Adinia Wirasti, Titi Kamal, Sissy Priscillia and Dennis Adhiswara.
Actors such as Ario Bayu, Christian Sugiono, Sarita Thaib and Dimi Cindyastira will also appear in the film.
Mira and Riri also enlisted the help of several collaborators for the sequel, including the musical duo Melly Goeslaw and Anto Hoed for the soundtrack and poet Aan Mansyur, who penned the poems read by Rangga in the new film.
"Ada Apa Dengan Cinta 2" was shot in Jakarta, New York and Yogyakarta—the last of which became the city where the sequel's gala premiere was held on Saturday.
According to Mira, the sequel will be shown on 183 cinema screens across Indonesia, to old and new fans of the franchise.
"We want the younger generation of viewers who watched 'AADC' on YouTube, DVD or TV to be able to see the beauty of the film," the producer said during a press conference last Monday, as quoted by Antara.
