Architecture Fair Opens at Jakarta's National Gallery
Jakarta. The National Gallery of Indonesia and the architecture department of University of Indonesia joined forces to hold the 2016 Architecture UI Fair, or AFAIR, which opened last Wednesday (27/1) at the gallery's venue in Central Jakarta.
Themed "The World Without Us," the annual exhibition showcases around 170 works by architecture and interior architecture students of University of Indonesia, as curated by leading architecture professor Yandi Andri Yatmo. This year's event also celebrates the 50th anniversary of the university's architecture department.
Through this exhibition, the architecture students "are trying to show the crucial role of an architect in harmonizing the human needs with the limited natural resources, and to persuade the society to understand how architecture should support the sustainability of human lives," said AFAIR organizers in a statement.
To highlight the theme, the participating students are exhibiting installations, mock-ups, photos and other visualizations of their novel architecture ideas throughout the event, which continues until Feb. 4.
Leading architect Irianto Purnomohadi will give an open lecture at the gallery this Saturday, followed by a talk show with such practitioners as Achmad Noerzaman, Muhammad Thamrin and Gigih Narendra.
The awarding event of i-Shelter design competition will also take place on Monday, as academicians Eko Prawoto, Budi Sukada and M. Nanda Widyarta will select the best submissions from architecture students from all over Indonesia.
