Designers to Showcase Indonesian Diversity at New York Fashion Week
Jakarta. Indonesian designers Barli Asmara, Catherine Njoo, Dian Pelangi, Vivi Zubaedi and Melia Wijaya and accessory brand Doris Dorothea are set to participate in New York Fashion Week on Sept. 7.
The event's organizer, International Management Group (IMG), selected them from 16 candidates proposed by the Indonesian Fashion Gallery (IFG), a collective representing Indonesian designers in New York.
According to IFG chief executive Teti Nurhayati, the designers will be featured in the fashion week's first stage session, in a show themed "Indonesian Diversity" held at The Gallery at the Dream Downtown hotel.
Dian will showcase her batik hijabs collection inspired by the city of New York.
"I will show a fusion of the Indonesian and the American style ... I am inspired by New York's active and dynamic life. I will show contemporary patterns on tenun, batik, and songket textiles, [and fabrics] colored with the unique tie-dye technique," Dian said at a press conference at the Gran Mahakam Hotel in South Jakarta on Monday (21/08).
Vivi, also a modest wear designer, will present Middle Eastern abayas made of batik and songket.
Inspired by Victorian gowns, Barli is going to show 13 deluxe women's wear designs in white. He combines lace, strings and other details of the era for an off-the-shoulder look that is currently trending in fashion.
Adorned with frangipani flower-shaped accessories by Grace Liem, Catherin's collection is dominated by black and gold, with cuts inspired by a traditional Balinese dance called legong.
Melia will use modern embroidery for the Sawunggaling batik pattern — a traditional Javanese representation of gamecocks.
The five collections will be complemented by Doris Dorothea's exotic leather bags and makeup by Indonesian cosmetics brand Wardah.
As a platform that gives designers an opportunity to make their debuts in the United States, the first stage session will also see Bella Ivory from Los Angeles, Cindy Monteiro from Cape Verde and Runa Ray from India.
