Dian Sastro Credits Co-Stars for Genuine Display of Sisterhood in 'Kartini' Movie
Jakarta. Actress Dian Sastrowardoyo said in a press conference at Plaza Indonesia in Central Jakarta on Wednesday (05/04) that the display of sisterhood in the new "Kartini" movie looks especially convincing due to her familiarity with co-stars Adinia Wirasti, Acha Septriasa and Ayushita Nugraha.
Dian, who plays the title role — Indonesia's national heroine Kartini, said she is lucky to be cast with her friends for the biopic. Adinia plays Kartini's older sister Soelastri, while Ayushita and Acha play her younger sisters, Kardinah and Roekmini.
The film follows the story of the young women as they learn what it means to be a woman in a patriarchal Javanese royal family in the late 19th century.
Kartini is the first film where Dian, Ayushita and Acha act together. Adinia had already played with Dian in the 2002 teen drama "Ada Apa Dengan Cinta?" (What's Up With Love?) and its 2016 sequel.
"As actors you cannot choose your partners, but we were lucky to be cast together in Kartini. It's my first time acting with Acha and Ayu, but I have known them personally for awhile, so it makes our relationship on the screen seem fluid, real and intimate," she said.
Kartini is also the first film in which Dian is playing a non-fictional character.
"It was a huge task, but I know this chance will probably never occur again in 20 or 30 years, so I went all out to be Kartini. I read all her letters and all the books about her," she said.
The film, helmed by Hanung Bramantyo, will open in Indonesian cinemas on April 19.
