Ghibli Film Fest in Indonesia Kicks Off With 'Spirited Away'
Jakarta. Academy Award-winning feature animation "Spirited Away" by Hayao Mizayaki opened the World of Ghibli Jakarta on Saturday (01/03) — a six-month celebration of Japan's Studio Ghibli productions.
Studio Ghibli is known for some of the most popular Japanese animations, including "My Neighbor Totoro," "Ponyo on the Cliff by the Sea," "Princess Mononoke" and "Howl's Moving Castle." Following "Spirited Away," also these films will be released in theaters across Indonesia. Each month, from April to September, excluding Ramadan in June, one film will have its premiere.
According to Willawati, chief executive of Indonesian film company Kaninga Pictures, Studio Ghibli's official partner in Jakarta, there are more attractions coming.
"The Ghibli team has been staying in Jakarta since the past month to make sure everything runs smoothly; we will also have an exhibition and a film festival. We will bring 22 films to Studio Ghibli fans in Indonesia," she said.
Willawati did not disclose the details, but she added that the exhibition showing Studio Ghibli's filmmaking process will open at the Ritz-Carlton hotel in Jakarta on Aug. 10. The film festival, which will screen 21 feature films and one short will start on the same date.
Studio Ghibli was established in 1985 by Mizayaki, another director Isao Takahata and film producer Toshio Suzuki.
"Spirited Away" will be in cinemas until April 7.
