Indonesian Craftsmen to Show Off Wares in Milan's Salone del Mobile Next Month
Jakarta. Indonesia's Creative Economy Agency, known as Bekraf, announced on Thursday (23/03) at the Italian Cultural Institute in Central Jakarta that Indonesia will take part in the annual "Salone del Mobile" furniture fair next month in Milan, Italy.
Salone del Mobile is the biggest furniture fair in the world. It is the place to catch all the latest trends in furniture design from countries all across the globe. This year, 165 countries will take part in the exhibition, including Indonesia.
"This will be our first time participating in the exhibition. Salone del Mobile will offer our designers a rare opportunity to introduce their brands to the world and enter the global market,” Bekraf marketing deputy head Joshua Simanjuntak said.
More than one hundred contemporary craft products from 50 Indonesian designers will be on display at the Salon del Mobile on 4-9 April.
Curator Aloysius Baskoro said most of the Indonesian designers will focus on handmade products in a contemporary style.
"We intend to bring new faces in the Indonesian craft scene, artisans who are used to pairing traditional techniques with contemporary designs without losing any of their originality," he added.
Designer Luthfi Hasan from Jakarta Vintage will show a foldable picnic chair made from wood and metal with replaceable cushions, perfect for indoor and outdoor use.
"The idea of this chair is to show how practical many Indonesian designs are, we're not always ornate. I mix wood and metal together to add longevity to the products."
Bekraf Deputy Chairman Ricky Pesik said Indonesia’s participation in Salone del Mobile will add more value to its craft products.
"We want to show the world the finer points of Indonesian craftsmanship, because this is what we're good at. The world has to know about our products," he added.
Director of ICI Jakarta, Michaela Linda Magri said the exhibition will be a great opportunity for Indonesian creative industries to enter the global market.
"Salone del Mobile will absolutely open the door to those who’d like to know more about Indonesian craft. We are here to support Indonesian creative industries to flourish in another country like Italy," he added.
