Jakarta Art Museum Launches '7 Fine Arts' Exhibition
Jakarta. The Art and Ceramics Museum kicked off a week-long '7 Rupa Perupa' ('7 Fine Arts') exhibition in Jakarta on Tuesday.
The exhibition will feature artwork by seven Indonesian artists; Akbar Linggaprana, Djoko Sudarwo, Lateevha, Rindy Atmoko, Sugiono, Tomy Faisal Alim, and Wahyu 'Geiyonk' Murtado.
"We are putting seven different artists [who vary in artistic style] on display to give the public a chance to get to know our artists better. We also hope this exhibition may increase the reputation of our local artists," said Esti Utami, the museum representative.
Narsen, the curator of the exhibition, said each artist makes his or her own statement through their artwork.
"The statement [of a piece of art] is an accumulation of the artist's observations on their subject matter, which [they interpret] esthetically," Narsen said.
For example, to Geiyonk, an image of a baby with butterfly wings printed on a negative film, aptly titled "Negative Baby," is a symbol of an urban creature.
"The message in this painting is when a child is uneducated, he or she will behave negatively, that is why I printed it on a negative film," he said.
Akbar, on the other hand, chose to highlight social issues in his work.
"One of the things that I wanted to talk about is virginity and how it used to be valued. I wanted to paint a woman who is contemplating what she did, which is against her parents wishes," he said.
This exhibition ends on Dec. 10.
