Coffee, a Lifestyle Philosophy
Jakarta. Judging, say, from the countless Instagram posts of coffee cups sporting the zaniest latte art uploaded everyday, it is safe to say that obsessing over coffee has moved on from being a hipster hobby into a national trend.
Coffee is now the second most consumed drink in Indonesia, beaten only by the humbler tea. And over the last ten years, Indonesia's coffee industry has really hit its stride.
Statistics released by the University of Indonesia in 2013 revealed that on average each Indonesian consumes one kilogram of instant coffee every year.
Coffee expert Adi Taroe said on Monday (07/11) an International Coffee Organization (ICO) study shows the number of coffee drinkers in Indonesia has been rising sharply, six percent faster than in anywhere else in the world.
Adi said "coffee used to be an old people's drink, but now even teenagers drink it."
But in spite of all the artisanal coffee Instagram posts, instant coffee apparently still dominates the market, according to Adi.
Actor Abimana Aryasatya said coffee is a the perfect drink for people in the creative industry, as a cup can often inspire him — and keep him up all night. "I am restless until I drink my first cup of coffee for the day," Abimana said.
