Jakarta. Indonesia's men's football team has advanced to the final of the 2018 Asean Football Federation Under-16 Championship, which is taking place in Sidoarjo, East Java.
Indonesia narrowly beat Malaysia 1-0 in the semifinal on Thursday night (09/08), with the only goal scored by striker Amiruddin Bagus Kahfi in the 72nd minute.
Amiruddinm, currently the tournament's top scorer with 12 goals, scored from penalty spot as Malaysian goalie Abdul Alim brought down Indonesian winger Mochammad Supriadi in the box earlier.
"I thought Malaysia will play attacking football with open play, but they were so defensive. We were struggling to seal the win," Indonesian coach Fakhri Husaini said after the game.
Indonesia has been unbeaten in the tournament since it kicked off on July 29.
Fakhri's team has won all six matches before the final that will take place at Gelora Delta Stadium in Sidoarjo on Saturday evening.
Thailand won against Myanmar by 1-0 also on Thursday to secure place in the final. The Thai team, too, has been unbeaten, but recorded one draw against Laos on Sunday.
The AFF U16 Championship was held for the first time in 2002. Indonesia has never won it, while Thailand had already triumphed three times — in 2007, 2011 and 2015.
