BNN Says Drug Networks From 11 Countries Operating in Indonesia
Jakarta. The chief of the National Narcotics Agency, or BNN, has said 72 international drug networks from 11 countries are currently operating in Indonesia.
BNN chief Comr. Gen. Budi Waseso made the claims on Friday (06/01) during a public lecture in Batam. The largest syndicates come from China, Africa and South America, he said.
"Each one is sending narcotics to Indonesia. Even if only a small amount of drugs reaches Australia, that country protests and said Indonesia has supplied into the state," Budi said.
He called on a greater crackdown on distribution across the country.
"Military chief [Gen. Gatot Nurmantyo] agreed that if his members are involved in the syndicates, they would be fired and processed. This is an extraordinary commitment," Budi said.
He said foreign national drug pushers had targeted officers and employees within state institutions, including the military, to ease business.
"It takes the commitment of all institutions to eradicate it," he said.
Batam is the second largest area for drug trafficking in Indonesia, due to its proximity to Singapore and Malaysia, he said.
