A Shift in Global Dynamics Demands Responsiveness From Indonesian Missions: Minister
Jakarta. Chief Security Minister Wiranto briefed Indonesian diplomats on changing world dynamics and touched on the importance of understanding present challenges during a meeting in Jakarta on Tuesday (13/02).
"When we aim to progress as a country, we must be aware of the challenges we are facing. Who are our competitors, what are their strengths? From there we can formulate a concept to win in this fierce global competition we’re in," Wiranto told reporters after a closed meeting with chiefs of Indonesian missions abroad.
One hundred and thirty-four heads of Indonesian missions, including ambassadors and consuls general, are attending the four-day meeting – which began on Monday – at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Jakarta.
The meeting covers Indonesia’s foreign policy priorities, including palm oil exports, protection of Indonesians abroad and Indonesia’s campaign for a non-permanent membership at the United Nations Security Council.
According to Wiranto, the world is facing different kinds of challenges today, due to changing global politics and the advancement of technology.
He said it is important for Indonesian officials overseas to be responsive to changing world dynamics, especially if Indonesia is to gain an edge on global competition, such as in economy.
President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo on Monday ordered Indonesian diplomats to step up efforts in economic diplomacy, including by seizing untapped potentials in non-traditional markets.
On Tuesday, meetings were focused on this aspect with briefings from Trade Minister Enggartiasto Lukita, chairman of the Indonesia Investment Coordinating Board (BKPM) Thomas Lembong and Industry Minister Airlangga Hartarto.
