Sentence Cuts Given to 841 Prisoners on Vesak Day
Jakarta. While Buddhists around the world celebrate Vesak Day, or Buddha's birthday, 841 inmates in Indonesian prisons saw their sentences reduced on Tuesday (29/05), the Ministry of Justice and Human Rights said in a statement.
Prisoners interned in North Sumatra, West Kalimantan and Jakarta saw reductions of up to two months of jail time.
The government of Indonesia typically grants sentence reductions to prisoners on major holidays.
Out of nearly 180,000 prisoners in the country, only 2,800 are Buddhists.
Sri Puguh Budi Utami, director general of Penitentiary Department at the ministry, said inmates who received sentence remissions have served at least six months of their total punishment and have displayed good behavior.
