1 Million International Students in US, More And More Indonesians
Jakarta. With more than 1 million international students enrolled in United States colleges and universities, Indonesia is now the 19th leading place of their origin, a report indicates.
The 2016 "Open Doors Report on International Educational Exchange," released on Monday (14/11) by the Institute of International Education, shows an upward trend of the US as a country of choice among students across the globe. It is also the first time that international student enrollment in the country tops 1 million.
Referring to the 2015-16 academic year, the number also marks a 7 percent increase in international students. The report indicates that more than 8,000 of them are from Indonesia — the highest number in 12 years.
In 2015-2016, more than 66 percent of Indonesian students in the US were undergraduates, 19 percent were graduate students, 11 percent pursued practical training, and the rest were enrolled in non-degree programs, such as English language courses or short-term studies.
Over the years, the US Embassy has been promoting the benefits of international education. It is currently holding International Education Week, which offers educational events at the American Cultural Center in Jakarta and information sessions on various kinds of scholarships available. The event ends on Friday.
