Integrated Campaign to Boost Foreign Investment in Indonesia
Jakarta. Over two hundred Singaporean investors attended the "Integrated Business and Investment Campaign in Indonesia" seminar last Tuesday, Nov. 29, an event spearheaded by the Indonesian Embassy in Singapore to encourage foreign investment in Batam, Bintan, Tanjung Pinang and Karimun.
In his speech, Indonesian Ambassador to Singapore Ngurah Swajaya highlighted Indonesia's consistently high economic growth recently — over thirteen percent in several regions, including in Maluku and Papua.
Indonesia is a potential market, especially considering its human resources, continued political stability and speedy infrastructure development, the ambassador said.
President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo and Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong had made it clear on their trip to Semarang last November that both countries want to increase economic cooperation, particularly in investment and tourism.
The gesture has been received positively by Singapore's business community.
Investment from Singapore still dominates foreign investment in Indonesia, with an increase of 44 percent in the first nine months of 2016 compared to 2015.
The official opening of the Kendal Industrial Park in Central Java should also attract more investment to Indonesia.
Batam, Bintan, Tanjung Pinang and Karimun are promising sites for investment with good infrastructure, tourism potential, manufacturing prospect and rapidly expanding container and fishing ports.
Ambassador Ngurah added that the Asean region, especially Indonesia, has continued to experience positive growth despite weakening global economy.
"We hope the increase in foreign investment will not only help our economy grow, but also improve the quality of life of the Indonesian people," Ngurah said.
