Jakarta. The Jakarta administration has proposed to extend the route of the city's mass rapid transit system to reclaimed "K" island off the shores of Ancol recreational park in North Jakarta as a cheaper alternative for the underground line's final station.

"The new location would add only one kilometer to the original plan, and the Jakarta administration will have 30 hectares of additional land [on K island]," Saefullah, Jakarta's regional secretary, said on Thursday (16/03).

Saefullah, however, did not comment on the Jakarta State Administrative Court decision that revoked provincial government permits for continuing reclamation development projects on K island.

Pembangunan Jaya Ancol, a public company controlled by the city government, is responsible for carrying out the development project on K island. The company has said it will appeal the court's decision to the Administrative High Court of Jakarta.

Under the original plan, the MRT's last station stop would be in Kampung Bandan, North Jakarta — to be built by state railway operator Kereta Api Indonesia (KAI).

Earlier this month, however, the city administration changed that plan, opting to build the final station near the Ancol recreational park after it was informed that KAI leased out its station to a third party.

The Jakarta administration said earlier that the Ancol station would add 4.1 kilometers of rail to the original track, but potentially increase the project's costs by 65 percent to Rp 38 trillion ($2.9 billion).
