FPI's Rizieq Unsure Whether He Will Comply With Police Summons
Jakarta. Leader of the Islamic Defenders' Front Rizieq Shihab, said he is not sure if he will show up for police questioning on Thursday (12/01).
Rizieq has been summoned for the second time, after he failed to comply with a summons on Jan. 5 in a defamation investigation. He was reported to police for defaming Indonesia's first President Sukarno.
"According to the regulations, if I do not show up, there will be another call. If I fail to come again, there will be a third one, and if I fail again, they will force me to come, correct?" Rizieq said on Wednesday (11/01).
"I will see, if I'm well, I will come. But if I'm ill, I won't. If there are no obstacles, I will show up, but I can't confirm it yet," he added.
On Sunday, Rizieq was reported to the Jakarta Police again and charged with violating the Information and Electronics Transactions (ITE) Law, for a speech that went viral on social media, in which he allegedly said the new rupiah banknotes featured the hammer-and-sickle symbol that resembles the logo of the long-disbanded and prohibited Indonesian Communist Party (PKI).
The police's criminal investigation unit is currently processing another report filed by the Indonesian Catholic Students Association (PMKRI) against Rizieq, who allegedly committed blasphemy in his speech about Christmas. Interreligious youth organization Rumah Pelita earlier also reported him for alleged hate speech.
Several watchdog organizations and experts have called on the National Police to fast-track their investigations against the FPI leader.
