Only Poor Students Entitled to Financial Aid From KJMU: Djarot
Jakarta. Acting Governor Djarot Saiful Hidayat has reaffirmed that only students who are gifted but financially disadvantaged qualify for the Jakarta Outstanding Student Card, or KJMU, and that the provincial administration will regularly evaluate recipients' academic performance.
"Those who receive [benefits from the] KJMU should keep studying. The evaluation will take place once a year, [based on their grade point average for] two semesters. If the GPA drops, we will automatically stop the KJMU funds," Djarot said at City Hall in Central Jakarta on Monday (22/05).
He added that recipients would also be evaluated on their social conduct.
"There will also be behavioral evaluations; if we find [evidence of] poor behavior, we will stop [the benefits]," Djarot said. "If they are involved in narcotics, or street fights, we will directly revoke [the benefits]. The idea is to educate. We will educate the public, not spoil them."
The acting governor's statement came in response to evidence of the misuse of funds disbursed under the program.
Several people who do not qualify for the KJMU program have allegedly taken advantage of it. However, Djarot did not provide further detail.
The intended purpose of the program is to assist university students with academic potential, but who are unable to pay for their studies.
Djarot further encouraged students to also apply for scholarships at their respective universities.
"We have a foundation that provides scholarships, but it is differed to the KJMU," he said.
