Police Nab Bearer of Desecrated Indonesian Flag in S. Jakarta
Jakarta. Police have arrested the man believed to have carried a desecrated Indonesian flag during a rally by the Islamic Defenders Front, or FPI, in front of the National Police headquarters in Kebayoran Baru, South Jakarta, earlier this week.
Investigators are currently questioning the man, identified only by the initials N.F., who was arrested in Pasar Minggu, South Jakarta, on Thursday evening (19/01).
"We have detained a man from Klender, East Jakarta. We caught him in Pasar Minggu. He has the initials N.F. and carried [the desecrated] flag during the FPI rally in front of the National Police headquarters," Jakarta Police spokesman Sr. Comr. Raden Prabowo Argo Yuwono said on Friday.
Argo did not say whether the man was an FPI member.
"He participated in the FPI rally. We have seized evidence in the form of the flag with [Arabic] text and a motorcycle used during the rally," Argo said.
"We are still questioning the accused [to determine whether he was instructed to carry the flag]. We are investigating the matter further," he added.
Argo said the decision to question the rally coordinator will depend on the outcome of the investigation.
"That decision will be based on further developments from the investigators. If required, we will summon [the coordinator]," he said.
The flag bearer is accused of violating the 2009 law on the national flag, language, state symbols and state ideology.
