Incumbent Jakarta governor Fauzi Bowo and his running mate Nachrowi Ramli said they plan to launch a social media campaign with the aim of netting the votes of middle-to-upper-class Jakartans in the likely and upcoming runoff election.

Quick count results showed the Fauzi-Nachrowi ticket finished second in Wednesday’s gubernatorial race, securing some 30 percent of the vote behind Solo Mayor Joko “Jokowi” Widodo and his running mate Basuki T. “Ahok” Purnama, who collected over 40 percent of the vote.

Since none of the candidates managed to secure the clinching 50 percent of the vote, however, a runoff is likely. Nachrowi shared his campaign plans for the second round at a discussion in Jakarta on Saturday.

“We have to make use of social media to draw the attention and grab the heart of middle-to-upper class residents. People in this class of society are able to criticize, scrutinize and analyze our visions, missions and programs,” Nachrowi said.

He admitted that his team was copying a strategy of the Jokowi-Ahok ticket, saying they learned that the popularity of the latter had been boosted by social media campaigns.

“Social media played an important role . . . We have to control this war of information,” said Nachrowi, who is the head of the Jakarta branch of the Democratic Party.
