Ahok Will Not Be Moved to Cipinang Prison Due to Security Concerns
Jakarta. Former Jakarta governor Basuki "Ahok" Tjahaja Purnama will not be moved to Cipinang Prison in East Jakarta to serve his two-year sentence for blasphemy, due to security concerns. He will instead be kept at the Police Mobile Brigade detention center in Depok, West Java.
The decision not to move Ahok was made by the chief warden of the Cipinang Prison, the Directorate General of Correctional Institution and the Ministry of Law and Human Rights.
"Yes, the decision where to put Ahok was made yesterday afternoon," North Jakarta state prosecutor Dicky Oktavia said on Thursday morning (22/06) as quoted by state news agency Antara.
Dicky said North Jakarta District prosecutors met with officers from Cipinang Prison at the Mobil Brigade (Brimob) detention center to weigh up security risks for the former governor if he was moved to Cipinang.
"We eventually decided to keep Ahok at the Brimob detention center. The Attorney General's Office will issue a press release on the details of the decision," the prosecutor said.
The former governor was sent to Cipinang Prison immediately after the North Jakarta District Court declared him guilty of blasphemy on May 9.
Soon after, thousands of his supporters flocked to Cipinang Prison to demand his release. The protest led to Ahok being moved to the Brimob detention center, where he remains until now.
