Jakarta. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Monday (23/07) confirmed that an Indonesian student was raped in Rotterdam, the Netherlands, and is now taken care of by the Indonesian embassy at the Hague, while investigation is ongoing.
"The citizen protection team at the Indonesian embassy will continue to provide assistance and coordinate with local authorities," Foreign Affairs Ministry's citizen protection director, Lalu Muhammad Iqbal, said.
The ministry will not reveal the victim's identity, Iqbal added, to protect her privacy.
The Rotterdam Police are currently investigating the case, and have so far questioned more than a dozen witnesses. They are also analyzing images from CCTV recordings.
The police said the young woman was seriously injured, Dutch media reported.
The victim was riding a bicycle in the early morning of Saturday from Rotterdam Central Station to her home in Herman Bavinckstraat.
Shortly after she locked her bicycle off the street, the assailant hit her with a bicycle chain and raped.
She was rushed to a hospital by neighbors.
