Medan. A four-year-old girl in Medan Deli, North Sumatra, is struggling to survive an unspeakable trauma: the torture and murder of her family by robbers.
A doll and toys, which the girl, Kinara, received from Minister of Social Affairs Khofifah Indar Parawansa, may be too little to heal such an injury.
Police have arrested Andi Lala, the mastermind behind the murder of Riyanto, 40, his wife Sri Ariyani, 35, her mother Sumarni, 60, and Kinara's siblings — 13-year-old Syifa Fadilah Hinaya and eight-year-old Gilang.
The victims were tortured to death at their house in Mabar village by Andi and his accomplices Andi Syahputra, 27, and Roni, 33 — both of whom were paid Rp 500,000 ($38) to kill.
"Each of them was given Rp 500,000. They have admitted to the murder," a police officer, who requested anonymity, told Suara Pembaruan on Sunday (16/04).
"Andi Lala is still investigated. He has also admitted to charges," North Sumatera Police violent crimes directorate head Senior Commr. Adj. Faisal F. Napitupulu said.
"Roni murdered Syifa and Gilang, and beat up Kinara. Andi Syahputra was patrolling the house surroundings," North Sumatera Police spokeswoman Sr. Commr. Rina Sari Ginting.
She said the perpetrators knew the victim had sold his land for Rp 500 million and the money was hidden at the family's house.
From the crime scene the murderers took a motorcycle and mobile phones. The police hunted them down by tracking the devices.
Kinara had to undergo a head surgery, after which Khofifah visited her at the hospital.
The minister said the government is going to look after the girl and secure her livelihood and education.
