Riau Police Officer Nabbed in Anti-Extortion Sting
Riau. The chief of Kuala Kampar Police was arrested in a sting operation targeting extortionists in Pelalawan, Riau, on Tuesday (18/10).
"The suspect, a first inspector with initials SS, was nabbed in a sting operation for receiving extortion money from a group of alcoholic drinks smugglers," Riau Police spokesman Pol. Supt. Guntur Aryo told Antara news agency in Pekanbaru.
SS is detained at a Riau Police detention facility and is currently being investigated by the police's internal affairs division, or Propam.
Guntur said SS could face suspension or even dismissal if proven guilty of helping the smugglers and receiving the extortion fees, locally known as pungli.
Riau Police have also questioned 15 other officers from its anti-riot Sabhara unit and traffic enforcement units in Pekanbaru, Siak and Riau for allegedly receiving extortion money in nine separate cases between August and October.
"If they are sentenced to more than three months in prison, they will be instantly let off on dishonorable discharge," Guntur said.
Guntur urged the public to report any official trying to extort money from them. The police are on a mission to find and punish extortionists in support of President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo's public service reform.
